After a year-long hiatus, Ed Sheeran is back with another album on the way. He announced the album, Divide, via video on Twitter at the beginning of the New Year.

On Jan. 6th Sheeran released two singles from the album rather than just one, telling 97.1 AMP Radio, “There’s no rulebook to follow, so you just have to do things that people aren’t doing.” He says, “I think it was quite hard to kind of pinpoint what song to go with to represent the album, so I thought I’d pick two that were kind of opposing ends of the album and release them at the same time.”

Although many fans expected Sheeran to release his entire album last Friday, he confesses the full album is not yet ready for the public. However, he notes that Divide will be released soon.

As Sheeran said, the two singles “Castle on a Hill” and “Shape of You” represent very different sounds. “Castle on a Hill” is the type of song fans can expect from Sheeran, while “Shape of You” introduces something new.

Ed Sheeran is known to write songs for other artists, including “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber, so one reason for the different sound behind “Shape of You” is because it was originally written for Rihanna.

Hearing Sheeran branch out from his prior albums adds an appreciation for his talent. Sheeran definitely has the skill to write whatever type of music he desires, as both “Castle on a Hill” and “Shape of You” have reached the top of the charts.

Fans now eagerly wait for the rest of Divide to be released, but luckily Sheeran says there will be more singles out soon.
